"Because it was the right
thing to do"
When
Pat Lee, Food Source Store Manager and Kirk Bergstrom, Food Source Meat
Department Manager heard about community residents who were in danger
of flooding and couldn't get sand bags through the county, they decided
to come to their aid, "Just because it was the right thing to do".
Calling their immediate Supervisor, Manny Pinheiro, and explaining the
flooding situation and no sand bags available, Pinheiro also thought it
was the right thing to do.
Their plan was to get some sand and bags to the Food Source location at
Elkhorn and Rio Linda Blvd. to distribute to those in need. But, they
still needed approval from their parent company, Raley's and from the
property owner. After going through the chain of command at Raley's to
get approval, they needed to contact the shopping center property
owner. After getting his approval they now needed to get the sand and
bags.

They tried to contact a nearby landscaping supply company, but
found they were closed, so they called Longer's Landscape Company on
Northgate Blvd. who agreed to deliver tons of sand and the bags to be
filled.
When the sand and bags were delivered to the shopping center parking
lot, not only did residents who needed the bags shovel the sand and
fill bags, but other good samaritans decided to help fill sand bags
just because they too thought it was the right thing to do. All in all,
Food Source purchased around 50 tons of sand and 3300 bags and all
because they thought it was "just the right thing to do".

Reform Water Board cost
scorecard
$43,616 and counting
by Jay O'Brien
As we reported in December, the Rio Linda/Elverta Community Water
District (RLECWD) had received attorney bills totaling $32,598.63 from
the health and benefits attorneys recommended by RLECWD Directors Mary
Harris and James Strutton. This amount paid attorney Richard Chiurazzi
through November 29th, and attorney Peter Stubbs through November 18th.
RLECWD has now paid Stubbs another $11,018.31 for his services for the
six weeks ending December 30. The total paid to Chiurazzi and
Stubbs is $43,616.94 as of January 9, 2006. This does not include
Chiurazzi's December bill, which had not been received by January 9.
If Chiurazzi and Stubbs continue for the next six months, performing
"discovery" to prove an alleged conspiracy to defraud "the public and
the District's ratepayers" that they claim may have taken place in
2000, their bills, at $195/hour, plus the associated court costs, will
substantially add to this total.
$43,616.94 is a cost of nearly $10 to each RLECWD customer. This does
not include the costs of the court decisions rendered against RLECWD on
December 29, 2005.
Harris and Strutton, when proposing health and benefits attorneys be
hired, set a cost limit of $6000. Harris said, "I think six thousand
would be an appropriate amount." Strutton said, "I would say no more
than six thousand, I would say that that should be more than
sufficient."
Strutton has resigned from his elected Board position, citing
"illness", his "wife's retirement", and "extensive travel" plans as his
reasons for resignation.
