Next Hayer Dam Meeting at new location
Rio Linda Elverta News October13, 2005
by Mick Klasson

A Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting on the Hayer Dam project will be held on Tuesday, October 25^th at 6:00 p.m.  It will be held at a new location for this group, the Sacramento Northern Depot Visitor Center at 6730 Front Street in Rio Linda.  Topics will include work to be completed this fall and work scheduled for summer 2006.

All are welcome to attend the meeting, which is sponsored by the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA) and the Sacramento County Department of Regional Parks, Recreation and Open Space (County Parks).

The Hayer Dam Renovation project includes construction of a pedestrian, equestrian, and bicyclist bridge over Dry Creek and construction of a water diversion facility using an “infiltration gallery”—buried perforated pipes that serve as an intake.  The diversion, which replaces one previously removed by SAFCA, will provide water to the Bell Acqua Ski Lakes under an existing water right.

The project was planned for completion this fall, but a coffer dam used to keep water out of the construction zone in the stream was overtopped by high water on September 27, causing the temporary dam to fail and the construction area to be filled with water and sediment. Due to this event and permitting conditions which require in-stream construction to be completed by October 15 to avoid affecting migrating steelhead and salmon, it will no longer be possible to complete all the work this fall.

Agenda topics at the CAC meeting will include:  the revised construction schedule, completion of the bridge and trail segments this fall, completion of water diversion in summer 2006, and an event being planned by SAFCA and County Parks to celebrate project completion.
