County to pave parkway from Dry Creek Road to 28th Street
Rio Linda Elverta News September 29, 2005
To complete in 2007

by Guy Kolling

Dry Creek Parkway Trails phase 1 construction will consist of 2.9 miles each of paved Class 1 shared-use bicycle/pedestrian trails and equestrian trails, stretching from Dry Creek Ranch on Dry Creek Road, to the Cherry Island Soccer Complex at 28th and U Streets.

The trails will be constructed on fallow agricultural land and park land owned by County Parks.  The majority of the paved shared-use trail will be constructed adjacent to the south branch of Dry Creek, with a short section constructed parallel to Dry Creek Road.  The parallel equestrian trail will be placed within the adjacent agricultural lands.  The existing band of riparian vegetation surrounding Dry Creek will be preserved to the greatest practical extent.

The paved multi-use trail will consist of a 12 foot wide trail paved with asphalt for bicyclists and skaters, and a three to four foot wide decomposed granite shoulder on each side for pedestrians.  The equestrian trail will consist of an 18-inch wide dirt path.  Also included in the project are native plant landscaping, benches and drinking fountains.

A signaled street crossing will be constructed where the proposed trail will cross Q Street, adjacent to the south branch of Dry Creek.  A prefabricated bridge will be installed where the proposed trail will cross the south branch of Dry Creek near the south end of Cherry Island Golf Course.

Primary construction staging areas are likely to be located at Dry Creek Ranch, at the Cherry Island Soccer Complex, and at the north or south side of Q Street.  Construction drawings and permitting are expected to be complete by fall 2006, bid during the winter of 2006-2007, and construction is expected to take place during summer 2007.

The project is funded by $1,506,625 of TEA-21 Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funds, with a match of $172,810 of Proposition 40 funds, for a total of $1,679,435 for design, permitting and construction.
