Norma-Lee wins Rio
Linda/Elverta 2003 Honorary Mayor title
Norma-Lee, who was sponsored by the Elkhorn Moose Lodge was proclaimed
the 2003 Rio Linda/Elverta Chamber of Commerce Honorary Mayor at the
annual Mayor's Ball. The Mayor's Ball was held Friday evening, April
11th at the American Legion Haggin Grant Post 521 Hall in Rio Linda.
The Honorary Mayor Contest is a fund raising event sponsored by the Rio
Linda/Elverta Chamber of Commerce and local nonprofit organizations.
The winner is determined by the number of vote tickets he or she sells.
The sponsoring organizations receive one half of the money from their
candidate's ticket sales. This year was a record breaker for the event
with over $5000 going to the sponsors.
Coming in as the first runner up was Debbie Coffelt who was sponsored
by the American Legion. Betty Canady, a former Honorary Mayor, was the
third runner up and was sponsored by the Rio Linda/Elverta Historical
Society.
Debbie Courtney, who was named as Citizen of
the Year by The NEWS, was introduced to those in attendance and was
presented a plaque by The NEWS for her outstanding community service.
She was also presented with a certificate from Assemblymember Tim
Leslie, 5th District.
The American Legion crew catered and served the dinner of roast beef
and received rounds of applause for their efforts in providing the
dinner and for their great service.
It was announced at the event by the Governor of the Elkhorn Moose
Lodge that the Lodge has now obtained their liquor license and will be
moving into their new location at Rio Linda Blvd. and E Street in May
of this year.
The Chamber of Commerce extends their thanks to the many merchants who
donated raffle prizes for the event.
